Lead us not into temptation… or revulsion

Like so much else in the world of competing truths, manipulating desirability has a dark side. We’ve looked at how we can increase the desirability of healthy food or useful work. But it is also possible to make us desire things that harm us or our society. The advertising industry has been doing it for decades. Cigarette commercials are still being produced that glamorize smoking, creating a desire in young people for a product that may kill them. By making us crave grease-laden fries and sugary drinks, fast-food marketing has contributed significantly to our obesity problem.

Even more insidious is the tactic of turning us against something or someone by persuading us that a particular organization, individual, object or group is undesirable. Newspapers and politicians have exercised this unsavoury form of mass influence against targets as diverse as sports fans, welfare claimants, pit bulls, tourists, single mothers, socialists, GM food, vegetarians, Muslims and obese people. But the most pernicious case of this phenomenon today is the campaign being waged against immigrants.
